  • Oasis had a penchant for sounding like groove laden Beatles while fighting amongst themselves like The Kinks ... and here, even when bringing aboard Dave Sitek from TV on the Radio to gather together all of the loose ends, leaving many of the songs from BE, for all they are and aren’t, sounding sort of slyly half baked, as if we the listeners are supposed to connect the dots, adding those missing elements from our own heads, by channeling our sense of musical history.Yes, Liam Gallagher still lifts liberally, but that’s was half the fun of Oasis, still half the fun with his older brother, and no exception here. Jumping straight to track four with “Second Bite Of The Apple,” where the infectious walking-line backbeat is lifted straight from The Zombies’ “Time Of The Season,” while the opening track, “Flick Of The Finger,” buzzes with sustained tainted wanderlust and originality, destined to be the smash hit that drives this outing forward, only to find the band shooting themselves in the back, leaving the song to crash and burn with a needless quote by Jean Paul Marate, from a play by Peter Weiss, read by Fonejacker Kayvan Novak, and if memory serves me correctly, once used in a Tariqu Ali book ... instantly bringing to mind the summation from the song “Dark Side Of The Moon.” Then there’s “Shine A Light,” a song which seems to be dancing around a bonfire that belongs to The Rolling Stones, where Liam reaches into the flames and steals undefinable bits and pieces. Though the most pretentious piece being “Don’t Bother Me,” which I actually love, is filled with a swirling hypnotic trance induced neo-psychedelic atmosphere, and shamelessly seeks to bring back to life the spirit of John Lennon.Having said all that, the songs “Start Anew,” “Iz Rite,” “Soon Come Tomorrow,” and “I’m Just Saying” prove that Mr. Gallagher is still a force to be reckoned with in rock n’ roll ... and that while we all may have held our collective breaths, hoping for so much more, Beady Eye have given us an awful lot to be satisfied with ... if we just Let It BE, and enjoy BE for all it is.
