With an ear focused on the funk (with a light side order of disco), Pat Barry’s Do Your Dance relives glittery platform shoes and hip-huggers; it’s like the 70s never left. There’s jangling guitars and steady bass all over the place. And although the production is smooth, there’s nothing particularly noteworthy in the first half to hang your hat on. After that, though, “What You Do” is a wonderful departure from the 70s trip, a mellow piece augmented by bongos, some sustained synth chords, and a short vocal sample; “Keep Us In Our Place” continues in that less frenetic mode. “Violet Trax” and “Do Your Dance” house things up in the traditional Toko style, but, as a whole, Do Your Dance seems slight compared to other Toko offerings.
